My 2017 21.5" Apple iMac
I have really liked my 2017 21.5" Apple iMac. After using it for over a
month and adjusting to there not being a built-in SuperDrive, it hasn't
been a major issue since I have been using an external SuperDrive. Since
FireWire stopped being implemented in 2013, it took a bit for me to
adjust to there not being a FireWire port at the back. Using the
Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and Thunderbolt 2 to
FireWire adapter (thank goodness it is FireWire 800, which is 9-pin
or 9-conductor) has been very good and reliable being used in Final Cut
Pro X, iMovie 10, and Adobe Premiere CS. That dongle has been very
different for me since I am used to FireWire at the back of the
computer, and I never used Thunderbolt anything before, it has become a
non-issue for me now and I like that very much. Something that has been
the biggest thing for me to adjust with was not being able to use iMovie
9 (Version 8) after using that with 2011 iMac. iMovie 9 is 32-bit, I
had issues (the capture window and timeline both had a gray look to
them) using that with macOS Sierra with the 2011 iMac. I went back to El
Capitan when I had the hard drive replaced. iMovie 9 was also having
the same kind of issues in High Sierra, and when I upgraded to macOS
Mojave, iMovie 9 opens but the iMovie 9 window doesn't show. Because of
not being able to use iMovie 9 now, I had to adjust and learn to use the
latest iMovie 10, Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro X. It has been very
exciting using iMovie 10 actually since I figured out how to capture
video into it (I tried using that before with my 2011 iMac, thought I
was capturing video into it, and I clicked done, no video was there in
the project window, I guess I had to use the Thunderbolt 1 port at the
back for the capturing to work in that iMovie since I was only using
FireWire and it didn't seem to connect with that), Final Cut Pro X is
amazing, and Adobe Premiere CS is amazing to, I really like all three of
these non-linear editing software. iMovie HD 6 has also been getting
progressively unusable, I can edit in it, but I can't capture video into
it anymore (the capture window when I switch to camera is white, so
that has been frustrating for me), iMovie HD 6 is also 32-bit, so that
explains it. I feel it was a better choice and value purchasing this
iMac than getting a Macbook Pro (which is what me and my mom Susan
had originally decided on), but the Macbook Pro doesn't have
traditional USB ports that are used for flash drives or
whatever other device with USB in it, I would have needed to get a
dongle with several ports in it anyway. I am highly excited and looking
forward to using this more when I move to San Antonio. Another thing, I
feel better with this purchase than getting one of the newest ones that
started being sold last month.
